Hi Ravi,
I have personally seen the lack of professionalism at an institute like IIT Kharagpur, it was embarassing to say the least, as I had taken a group of VCs and Pro VCs from the sterling group of Universities from the UK (this was while I was with the British Council in Kolkata) and I wondered if this was the state of affairs here what would it be elsewhere.
The comparative rankings should open the eyes of all Indian students who sometimes asks us why should we study abroad, don’t we have excellent institutions like the IITs and the IIMs in India? Your blog should comprehensively expose their fallacy. In fact many who ask this kind of question would never ever make it the IITs or IIMs! These guys should also come to know where our IITs and IIMs stand in the world arena and if that is their position I shudder to think what is the state of other Indian institutions, especially the private ones who are out to make money as their first objective.

I agree with you Victor… “These guys should also come to know where our IITs and IIMs stand in the world arena and if that is their position I shudder to think what is the state of other Indian institutions, especially the private ones who are out to make money as their first objective.”

the problem here is ravi that these rankings are actually based on a wide variety of things like infrastructure ,quality of teaching , employment placements etc .. IIT and IIM are way ahead of all others specially in ther selection criteria but lack the resources and funding that other american and australian universities enjoy and hence this ranking

I would like to believe that “IITs and IIMs are way ahead of others in selection criteria”. However now this is also being debated. What these institutions admit are those who have been synced to the entry exams thanks to the coaching institutes who actually take away the real schooling from the students. I am talking more for the IIT here and this argument is further supported by what Narayan Murthy stated some days ago… The quality of students at IITs has been falling. Now let me turn to IIMs. They do admit some of the finest Indian students but then do they really teach an MBA… Around the world the best of MBA programs focus also on work-experience that an applicant had and most require a minimum of 3 years experience (average of 5-7 years) topping an above average academic background. Now tell me, won’t such make better middle managers as compared to academic wiz-kids who may join the IIMs. Further, the profile of the professors at most IIMs is largely academic and those who do come with some industry experience are only a small proportion… There is more to be done in India… Those who do not want to be engineers get forced to take engineerings… Our Bachelors degrees are not really job-focussed and hence employability is low for non-engineers… Our MBAs are largely academic and focus on fresh graduates… There is more to be done in India before we can call ourselves world-class. We are only India-class and India-ready…
